Pin to Pinterest on the iPhone

So if you’ve see the post before this one you know that I’ve been itching to get invited to Pinterest…and that it finally happened!  Whew hew!

But – there is no Pinterest application on the iPhone.  What?  Even my usually stoic husband was surprised at that one.  I was bummed.  90% of my internet use occurs via my iPhone.  After all, I am usually surfing the web for inspiration (i.e. shopping!)  while I am holding a sleeping 3mo old.  A single hander if you like.  So not having Pinterest available via my iPhone was completely devastating…well, for about 20 minutes until I came across Simply The Nest Blog where another Mommy like me found a way to use Pinterest on her iPhone!  Ahhhh…glory be…I could kiss this woman!  [Alice if you are reading this muchas gracias, chica!]

I of course encourage you to visit the original post but I’ve also lifted her instructions and included them here:

First of all, you need to modify an existing bookmark on your iPhone. Select any old bookmark, and click Edit. Change the name of the bookmark to Pinterest (or Da Bomb, it’s entirely up to you), and copy/paste the following into the URL window:

javascript:void((function(){var%20e=document.createElement(‘script’); e.setAttribute(‘type’,’text/javascript’); e.setAttribute(‘charset’,’UTF-8′); e.setAttribute(‘src’,’http://assets.pinterest.com/js/pinmarklet.js?r=’+Math.random()*99999999);document.body.appendChild(e)})());

It looks like a chunk of random characters, but it comes out in a nice long line in the URL window. Then click Done, and Done.

This code is taken from Pinterest’s blog, and is part of their instructions for using Pinterest on the iPad. I figured what the heck, I’d try it on the iPhone – and lo and behold, while it doesn’t work the way they describe (it’s supposed to add the Pinterest bookmarklet to the toolbar), it works just fine in a completely different way.

So here’s what you do next. When you come across an image that you’d like to pin (in this example, I’m going to pin an image from my blog), click Bookmarks at the bottom of the window. Note that you shouldn’t open a new window – stay on the webpage with your chosen image, and just hit the Bookmarks icon. Locate your Pinterest bookmark, and click it. This runs some nifty kind of magic on the webpage with your chosen image, and pulls out all the images into a grid. Select the image you want to pin, and click Pin This.

Simply genius.  And yes, it works.  Deep breath of relief.  Now that I’ve overcome that obstacle it is onto the next crisis…

    Thanks for the post! Just so you know, we are working on an iPhone app…like RIGHT now 🙂

    Thanks a ton for using Pinterest and being such a positive person in the community.

      Wow! Thanks for responding Ben! Don’t worry I know you guys are working on the iPhone app…but your website is just so awesome that there are those of us that just can’t wait. I am addicted to Pinterest and I’ve been a member for less than 24hrs. Thanks for the awesomeness… Looking forward to the app and until then will be doing it the “ghetto” way.

    I copied and pasted just as you directed and it worked one time and then no longer worked. Any ideas?

      Hey Lo,

      In the last few days Pinterest has been doing some major updates. I was not able to pin from my desktop because they are revamping things. 😦

      But in case it is not that I’d double check your paste. You can even go to Pinterest.com (look for it under iPad application even though I know that the correct link is on my blog because I triple checked). If I were you I’d redo the whole thing and try again.

      Let me know if this works!

    Yes, this works but it only attaches the photo and doesn’t add the “Link” to the website it came from. Does anyone know how to fix this problem? I want followers to be able to click on my “pin” and be redirected to the website I got it from. Thanks for any help I can get.
